- What Qualifies
'Qualified production costs' are costs for tangible property or services used or performed within MT directly and predominantly in the production (including post-production) of a qualified film. Qualified production costs generally include most below-the-line items including costs of technical and crew production, expenditures for facilities, props, makeup, wardrobe, set construction, background talent, etc., and generally exclude costs of stories and scripts, and wages for writers, directors, and producers.
- Application Considerations
Production company registration is required. Contact the Montana Secretary of State Business Service Division. Register the production with the Montana Secretary of State. Submit the Big Sky on the Big Screen Act Pre-Certification Application with script copy or synopsis and the intended distribution plan.
Submit five-part application. YouTube applicants must first submit a 'Preliminary Pitch' and receive pitch approval before applying for the grant. After grant approval, a letter of commitment is required.

- Project Criteria
Cash Grant (no minimum spend):
Feature Film And TV Grant: Up to 20% of all qualifying expenditures if >= 50% of principal photography in MT (when combined with the tax incentive).
Resident Filmmaker Grant: Up to $50K grant allocation if filmmaker is an MT resident with a validated credit as a producer, director, or primary director of photography.
Development Grant: Up to $50K grant allocation if MT based production creates MT centric content screened exclusively on grant funded YouTube Channel
