James Watkins is to direct Gold, a new film depicting the life of British athlete-turned-Olympics star Sebastian Coe - who will be played by Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe.
The story comes from a script by Will Davies (Puss in Boots) and Academy award-winner Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and tells of Coe’s fierce rivalry with fellow athlete Steve Ovett. The film is based on the acclaimed book The Perfect Distance by Pat Butcher, who will act as a consultant on the project.
The film is looking to shoot in the UK and Russia in April next year.
Joanna Anderson, Vicky Licorish, and Kevin Loader (Hyde Park on Hudson) will be producing the feature. UK production house Al Films, together with BBC Films and the BFI have financed the development. Additional financing is coming from Ingenious Media’s Senior Film Fund. BBC Films chief Christine Langan will executive produce.
Watkins previously worked with Radcliffe when he directed Woman in Black.
The young Brit has not been sitting still lately. His new feature Kill Your Darlings is set for release during Christmas and he can be seen next in romantic comedy The F Word. He will also star opposite Juno Temple in upcoming thriller Horns, based on a book by Joe Hill.
