The cities of Girona and Peniscola are among the Spanish locations set to benefit from hosting part of the production on HBO’s behemoth hit Game of Thrones.
The network has confirmed that some of season six will film in the ancient Catalonian city of Girona and also the rocky fortified seaport of Peniscola in the Valencia region, during its five month shoot which starts later this summer.
To host Game of Thrones (GoT) is a massive boost for any town, city or region. Apart from the immediate inward investment from the production team moving into town - needing food, accommodation, transport, extras etc - the long term rewards are also plentiful.
The knock-on effect of tourism on a specific filming spot has been well-documented for some time, and for a show like GoT with its vast and vociferous fan base, the cities stand to make gains for years to come as viewers seek out the location hotspots.
In production terms, Belfast has become synonymous with the massive fantasy drama - and indeed credited with driving more production generally to Northern Ireland - but amid all the recent news announcements about Scotland being on the verge of getting its first purpose built studio, there has been speculation that the folk of the Seven Kingdoms could up sticks and march towards the Highlands.
