Tim Roth and Christina Hendricks are filming new crime miniseries Tin Star near Calgary in Alberta, western Canada.
Produced by the UK’s Kudos Film and Television, the miniseries stars Roth (pictured in Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight) as a British police detective who relocates his family to a small Rocky Mountains community for a quieter life.
He and his family face new challenges when a huge oil refinery opens nearby, attracting organised crime elements to the small town.
Filming for Tin Star is based in High River, south of Calgary, with a former warehouse being adapted as a studio facility for the shoot that’s scheduled to run through to November.
“High River often provides film companies with a very attractive location for filming: we have the perfect setting surrounded by spectacular foothills and mountain scenery,” said Jodi Dawson, manager of economic development in the town.
Calgary is becoming a more popular Canadian filming location and has enjoyed a profile boost with US TV series like the long-running Hell on Wheels and the critically-acclaimed Fargo. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar-winning survival drama The Revenant also filmed near the city.
Alberta will shortly get its first purpose-built studio facility with the opening of the Calgary Film Centre, which will offer three sound stages across 50,000 sq ft.
