New Irish/Luxembourg co-production feature Black 47 will film scenes on location in both Luxembourg and Ireland between now and the end of January.
The film is set in 1847 at the height of the Great Famine in Ireland, which devastated the country over a brutal seven years.
Around a million people died and a similar number made the decision to emigrate.
Lance Daly’s movie follows an Irish soldier who returns home from fighting for the British and seeks revenge when he discovers his family forced from their land to the poor house.
Black 47 is partly financed by the Luxembourg Film Fund, as the small European country has had a co-production treaty with Ireland since 2011.
Ireland continues to grow in popularity as an international filming location, partly because of its generous filming incentive support programme. Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII have been among the highest-profile visitors in recent years, while Sean Penn and Mel Gibson have been in Dublin in the last few weeks for The Professor and the Madman.
The country is also building its slate of co-productions and the Irish Film Board is set to work with Creative BC in Canada on TV drama The Gulliver Curse. Filming is scheduled for Ireland, while post-production and visual effects work will be carried out in British Columbia.
