The outlook seems bright for Florida’s film tax incentives scheme as a vote was passed this week to restructure the programme and replenish its empty coffers.
When the state launched its package for filmmakers in 2010, the potential budget to be awarded over the subsequent six years – around $269m – had dried up within three.

However, on 9 March, Republican representative Nancy Detert’s bill was unanimously passed by the Florida Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee to refill the fund to a figure yet to be announced, and also to restructure the scheme mostly as a tax rebate programme, with around 30% going towards cash incentives.
Film, TV and digital productions would qualify for the rebates on completion of their project, dependent on their hire of local crew and expenditure within Florida.
If the bill becomes law, it would also see the film commission move from the current state film office at the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to Enterprise Florida, the public-private organisation whose aim is to attract businesses to relocate to the Sunshine State.
