Hawaii Film Studio is planning to boost its appeal with $3.5m of renovation work to improve the decades-old facility.

The complex currently offers a 16,000 sq ft sound stage and additional facilities including a construction mill and production bungalows. But the studio is in desperate need of renovation using money made available by the Governor’s Office last year, reports local news outlet KHON2.

“Parts of it date back to the 70s,” said state film commissioner Donne Dawson, in comments to the outlet. “This film studio is a critical piece to Hawaii’s growing film industry. The cottages are more than 40 years old. They are termite-eaten [and] rat-infested.”

Hawaii is a popular filming location, especially for exotic jungle settings within the US. The state offers a refundable tax credit of up to 25% and productions are specifically incentivised to shoot on the archipelago’s smaller islands.

The hit TV drama Lost previously helped Hawaii sustain its production profile and a reboot of the classic 80s crime drama Hawaii Five-0 has since found new success.

Recent high-profile feature productions to film in Hawaii have included Jurassic World, Godzilla and Alexander Payne’s Oscar-winning family drama The Descendants.
