Marvel will film superhero sequel Thor: Ragnarok at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland and will spend AU$100m locally on the production.
The Australian government announced last week that it had secured the new Thor movie and a sequel to Ridley Scott’s alien drama Prometheus, and specific filming locations have now been confirmed for the former.

Marvel’s parent company Disney filmed Pirates of the Caribbean 5 at Village Roadshow Studios earlier this year, and this played a major part in convincing executives to bring Thor: Ragnarok to Australia as well.
“Queensland offers an amazing and diverse backdrop for Thor: Ragnarok and we are very excited to bring this film to such an incredible locale,” said Louis D’Esposito, co-president of Marvel Studios. “Marvel Studios would like to thank the Queensland government for helping to make this a reality.”
Village Roadshow Studios has also hosted Dwayne Johnson’s disaster movie San Andreas, and Angelina Jolie’s World War Two drama Unbroken. Adventure drama Kong: Skull Island is preparing to film scenes in Queensland in early 2016.
“I am thrilled that Thor will be filming exclusively in our state,” said Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland. “As our economy diversifies, Queensland is demonstrating its strength as a lead destination for filmmakers both internationally and locally, and my government is doing what it can to ensure that Queensland remains a global hub [for] the screen sector.”
Australia offers distinct filming incentive support for producers, location work and post-production, as well as a separate fund for one-off payments to help secure big-budget international shoots.
Like all Marvel’s movies, the Thor franchise has followed the world’s strongest filming incentives. The first film was based in New Mexico and the second was shot in the UK.
