Romania has been called on to launch formal filming incentives and take advantage of the country’s international popularity.
Each year the country’s production industry delivers around €50m a year directly into the economy, according to a study from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Romania. This figure quadruples when taking into account businesses on the periphery of the production industry that still benefit from screen sector spending.

What’s more, over 80% of the money spent in Romania’s production industry comes from international shoots.
“The overall costs for film productions in Romania are competitive, but the cost difference to other countries in the region (estimated at 3-5%) is not big enough to compensate for the lack of tax incentives that most of the countries in the region offer,” said Bogdan Belciu, of Management Consulting Services at PwC Romania, an author of the study.
Foreign film production in Romania could increase by a factor of seven with formal filming support in place, PwC Romania estimates.
Romania’s European neighbours the Czech Republic and Hungary have both been boosted by their filming incentives, the report found.
The BBC spent about £16m in the Czech Republic filming the second season of its adventure series The Musketeers, which was the country’s highest-spending international shoot in 2014. Historical drama The Last Kingdom, also made for the BBC, filmed largely in Hungary.
