A major new feature film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, The War Magician, is set to shoot in locations throughout Europe and the Middle East.
The feature is a big-screen adaptation of David Fisher’s fact-based book with a screenplay by Gary Whitta (Rogue One, Star Wars Rebels, The Book of Eli).
Set during World War Two, the story centres on British hero Jasper Maskelyne (Cumberbatch), the world-famous magician whose ingenious illusions aided the Allied fight against the Nazis. Maskelyne went on to form a brigade, known as “The Magic Gang” to whom he taught tricks from making troops, tanks and buildings seemingly disappear to creating fake armies.
The extraordinary deceptions worked on a grand scale – at one point the Magic Gang ‘hid’ the Alexandria harbour and made the Suez Canal ‘disappear’; crucial moves in the run up to the North African campaign. So considerable were Maskelyne’s skills that Hitler put him on his personal blacklist…
The film comes from Storyscape Entertainment, Lonetree Entertainment and SunnyMarch (Cumberbatch’s London-based shingle). Cumberbatch’s founding partners in SunnyMarch, Adam Ackland and Adam Selves produce.
The Imitation Game star first has to finish off filming his starring role in Doctor Strange, and is also preparing to shoot Series 4 of Sherlock in the UK next spring.
