Croatia is a popular European filming location with a 20% cash rebate for films and TV series. In recent years its highest-profile international production has been HBO’s Game of Thrones, which used Dubrovnik as a stand-in for the Westeros capital King’s Landing.
The Star Wars production team is expected to spend around €5m for the few days of filming in Dubrovnik, and the city itself will reportedly stand in for a new alien planet.
Production for Star Wars: The Force Awakens also visited Abu Dhabi and European locations including the small island of Skellig Michael off the south-west coast of Ireland.
The next movie in the franchise to be released in cinemas will be Rogue One: A Star Wars story in December this year. Star Wars: Episode VIII will come out in December 2017.
Disney acquired Star Wars production company Lucasfilm for $4bn in 2012 and has already recovered half its investment in international box office from The Force Awakens.
