Marvel’s Black Panther to film in South Korea

Marvel has worked in South Korea before, having filmed key action sequences for Avengers: Age of Ultron on location in Seoul.

As KFTV reported last year, Marvel had been looking into shooting Black Panther partly in Africa. However, Marvel describes the country of Wakanda as a “technologically advanced African nation”, so it seems likely that South Korea has become the chosen stand-in.

Korea offers a 25% cash rebate as a filming incentive for productions that spend the equivalent of around US$2m in the country. A smaller incentive is available for lower-spending productions.

Marvel has based most of its superhero movies in Atlanta in recent years, taking advantage of the US city’s generous filming incentives and studio facilities. Indeed, the studio's ensemble superhero sequel Avengers: Infinity War is also currently filming in Atlanta. Doctor Strange has been a high-profile recent exception, as it used the UK’s Longcross Studios as a production centre.
