James Mangold’s X-Men spinoff movie Logan filmed on location in Louisiana and New Mexico, doubling the two states for much of the American mid-West.

The film is set in the near-future and follows Hugh Jackman’s ageing mutant Logan (aka Wolverine) and his mentor Professor Charles Xavier as they flee new enemies.

Production was partly based at the Big Easy Studios in New Orleans, which offers eight stages and 250,000 sq ft of floor space. In recent years the facility has hosted Hollywood studio movies like Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Jurassic World and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

“We really wanted to create the sense that we were going across a long journey in the movie,” said Francois Audouy, the film’s production designer.

“From the beginning, Jim (James Mangold) wanted to incorporate a lot of different looks into the film – from the dry desert in El Paso and Mexico through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma into Kansas and up through the badlands of South Dakota. The real challenge was to try and figure out how to create this variety in two states with only a handful of locations.”

Louisiana and New Mexico are America’s southern production hubs as they offer generous filming incentives, state-of-the-art studios and experienced local crew.

Logan is the third standalone Wolverine movie and like most big-budget productions the series has followed filming incentive support around the world. The previous two movies shot largely in Australia, doubling New South Wales for global locations including Japan.
