The film will chart the band’s success leading up to their iconic performance at the Live Aid charity concert in 1985.
Mercury’s fellow Queen band members are being played by Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello and Gwilym Lee, while Brian May and Roger Taylor are involved behind the scenes as producers.
GK Films is involved as one of the producers on the movie.
“I just had my make-up, hair and costume tests as Freddie Mercury and it was overwhelmingly cool and truly unforgettable,” Malek said recently on social media.
The US actor won an Emmy in 2016 for Mr Robot, a US series that follows a computer expert who is recruited to help undermine a major financial corporation.
