“It's great to be filming The Kid in New Mexico,” said Nick Thurlow, the film’s producer.
“Here in the land of enchantment, with the echo of Billy the Kid’s past exchanges with Pat Garrett, what better place to be filming our story.”
The real outlaw known as Billy the Kid was active in New Mexico and Arizona in the late 1870s, and was chased by Garrett in a story that was mythologised over time.
New Mexico is a hugely popular filming location for Western stories. Scott Cooper’s 1890s-set Hostiles was shot in and around Santa Fe and is currently on the festival circuit, while the Coen Brothers’ Western TV anthology series The Ballad of Buster Scruggs filmed in the same area over the summer.
