Director Quentin Tarantino’s next film is set to receive California tax credits, along with Karyn Kusama’s Destroyer starring Nicole Kidman.
The two films are among 11 to receive the state credits totalling nearly $63m, with the line-up comprising four independent and seven non-independent features.
There were 54 applications in total for this round of allocations from the state’s expanded Film & Television Tax Credit Program 2.0.
Tarantino’s as-yet-untitled film with the working title Untitled #9, is set in in LA in the late 1960s and is said to reference the infamous Manson murders. Recent reports have suggested a roll call of A- listers circling the project - recently snapped up by Sony Pictures - including Margot Robbie and Tom Cruise. It is to receive more than $18m in tax credits.
Also set to receive the credit is the Chris Sanders-directed adaptation of Jack London’s Call of the Wild for Fox, which gets around $17m, and Kusama’s modern crime thriller Destroyer starring Nicole Kidman as an LAPD detective benefiting by $2.5m.
Three of the 11 projects plan to shoot a substantial number of scenes outside the traditional Los Angeles 30-Mile Zone. The complete list of features qualifying will generate an estimated $320m in production spending with employment for around 2,500 cast and crew.
“Despite aggressive incentives worldwide, California is once again competing for big projects because we’re able to provide the best overall value.”

In September 2014, the Golden State’s production incentive more than tripled from $100m to around $330m annually. It was also extended to include big-budget features, pilots and one-hour TV series for any distribution outlet that had previously been ineligible from the programme.
The next round of applications is from 7-13 March 2018.
