Dwayne Johnson’s new adventure movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle filmed scenes on location in Hawaii.

The story – originally a children’s book published in the early 1980s – was previously made into a film in 1995 starring the late Robin Williams, but the new movie, directed by Jake Kasdan, takes the story into the jungle world of Jumanji for the first time.

“For the audience to believe that our heroes really had been pulled into the jungle, we really had to go to the jungle,” said producer Matt Tolmach.

“Fortunately, Hawaii had a variety of lush jungle environments that gave us everything we needed. It’s a dramatic setting that heightens the tension and provides an incredible contrast with the everyday life of the real world in the film.”

The production team built several key sets on location on the island of Oahu, which hosts Hawaii’s state capital Honolulu.

Hawaii is a hugely popular location for American shoots with jungle settings as it is an easily-accessible US state with filming incentive support of up to 25%. The Pacific archipelago has recently hosted Jurassic World and its sequel, as well as the TV drama Marvel’s Inhumans and the long-running reboot of crime series Hawaii Five-O.

Hawaii does have a studio facility, but most feature productions film their interiors elsewhere. The Jumanji team relocated to Atlanta to film on certain set builds and to shoot scenes set in the ‘real’ world that bookend the story.
