“The Department of Defense and the Navy have agreed to support the production of Top Gun: Maverick,” said the US Navy in a statement to NBC San Diego.
“The Navy is supporting one shoot this week at Naval Air Station North Island, per a Production Assistance Agreement (PAA) signed by Paramount and the Department of Defense.
“The PAA covers two days of shooting. Details relating to future filming, and specifics on what support the Navy will provide in support of the ongoing production, are still being worked out.”
‘Maverick’ was the Navy call sign for Tom Cruise’s hotshot pilot in the original Top Gun movie and Cruise will appear in the new film. The star announced the start of production through social media.
Hosting the Top Gun sequel will be a big win for California, should the producers ultimately decide to pick the state as their main filming location.
California still faces significant challenges getting more big-budget features to shoot in California, with many movies opting to take advantage of the stronger filming incentive support in Atlanta, Vancouver, Toronto and London.
