Star Wars Episode IX, the closing chapter in the saga’s current trilogy, has started filming at Pinewood Studios near London.

Filmmaker JJ Abrams has returned to the director’s chair after previously co-writing and helming trilogy opener The Force Awakens.

The new movie is described as “the final instalment of the Skywalker saga” and will feature original stars Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher, as well as actors Daisy Ridley (pictured) and John Boyega.

Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi, will be involved with a new trilogy featuring a fresh cast of characters that is likely to arrive in the 2020s.

Production on Episode IX begins only a few months after the release of the franchise’s standalone movie Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Additional standalone films are planned but Lucasfilm’s production strategy is being reassessed since Solo became the first in the new saga to underperform at the international box office.

Pinewood Studios has been the main base of all four Star Wars movies released since the brand was relaunched in 2015.

Key international filming locations have included Ireland, Croatia, the Canary Islands and the Maldives.
