Authorities in Ontario, Canada, have revealed plans to build a new film studio that will reportedly offer the largest sound stage in North America.
Announced at the Toronto International Film Festival, the new 400,000-sq-ft studio will cost $100m to develop in the city of Markham near Toronto and will include a 70,000-sq-ft sound stage.

The facility is scheduled to open in late 2020.
“This development will increase production space for local and international films that will attract Hollywood North [the colloquial name given to Canada's production industry], China and Bollywood, while continuing to support high-paying skilled jobs in the city of Markham and strengthen Ontario’s competitive position as a leading global market for film,” said Frank Sicoli, co-founder of First Studio City, in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter.
Toronto is one of the top production hubs in Canada, and indeed North America, meaning there is a high demand for studio space.
Pinewood Toronto Studios is one of the city’s major film facilities and at the end of last year announced plans for a new sound stage, offices and workshops. The studios already offer a 49,500-sq-ft ‘mega stage’ that is the largest purpose-built stage in Canada and is currently home to the CBS series Star Trek: Discovery.
