Rome filming locations for kidnap drama Trust

Controversially his billionaire grandfather, oil tycoon J Paul Getty (played by Donald Sutherland, pictured), refused to pay the millions in ransom demanded by the kidnappers.

Boyle’s production team spent nearly six months scouting locations in Rome for an eventual six-week shoot that involved a 200-strong crew.

Production eventually encompassed well over a dozen historic locations throughout the city, with the team scheduling an August shoot – a time of the year when many businesses in Rome close down for the summer.

Production designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb joined Trust to turn the chosen Roman locations into the 1973 period setting, having worked with Boyle regularly since their first collaboration on his sci-fi film Sunshine, released back in 2007.

“It was great to work with Suttirat as she was very involved and very quick to understand how Rome and the Italian crew work and was respected by all the crew,” says Robin Melville, the series’ supervising location manager, in comments to KFTV.

“Danny Boyle was always in the background, even when he was not in Rome. It was a real pleasure to work with Danny, who was always open to ideas and to see alternative locations.

“Both Danny and Suttirat came up with solutions at locations that were incredible and made them look like they had not changed since the 1970s.”

Italy has become a more popular European filming location since boosting its production incentive support a few years ago.

Recent high-profile movies have included Wonder Woman, which shot the Amalfi coast as its lead character’s fictional Mediterranean-style home, while George Clooney filmed in the country earlier this year for a TV adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Second World War satire Catch-22.

Trust comes just a few months after Ridley Scott tackled the same story with his feature All the Money in the World, which also shot scenes in Italy.
