Action movie Mortal Kombat to film in Adelaide

A new movie version of retro videogame Mortal Kombat is set to film in South Australia, with a production base at Adelaide Studios (pictured).

The Mortal Kombat fighting videogame was originally launched in 1992 and developed into an immense media franchise that has included various films and TV series.

Commercials veteran Simon McQuoid will helm the new movie for New Line Cinema as his feature directorial debut and Aquaman director James Wan is involved as a producer.

The film is scheduled to spend around A$70m in South Australia, with filming and post-production both planned for the state.

“We are thrilled to be highlighting South Australian locations, talent and facilities for Mortal Kombat,” said Katherine Beyda, executive vice president of physical production for New Line Cinema.

“It brings together all of the components we need to make an ambitious action film a success and we applaud the South Australian Film Corporation for their role in attracting the production to their region.”

McQuoid praised South Australia’s “uniquely beautiful landscapes”, suggesting that the film will be shooting on location around Adelaide, as well as on the city’s sound stages.

Adelaide Studios offers a pair of sound stages and various post-production facilities and is used mainly for Australian film and TV shoots.

Recent high-profile shoots in Adelaide have included Francis Annan’s prison-set feature Escape from Pretoria, which stars Daniel Radcliffe and doubled Adelaide for Cape Town.
