Twenty major network TV shows are set to shoot in New York State this year, all of which will receive the state’s filming incentive.
An additional 25 shows commissioned by smaller production companies and by streaming services and cable firms are already shooting or will film later in the year and will also get tax credit support.
America’s major networks spent $1.4bn on production in New York State in 2018, with TV shows delivering around $4.50 for every dollar issued in tax credit support, according to government agency Empire State Development.
Returning shows will include law enforcement dramas FBI and Blue Bloods, and political series Madam Secretary.
“The film and TV production and post-production industry supports tens of thousands of jobs in the Empire State every year and the series that film in the state in 2019 will bring an economic boost to local businesses and communities across New York,” said Howard Zemsky, president, CEO and commissioner at Empire State Development.
New York remains one of the top production hubs in the US. Studio infrastructure continues to undergo development in New York City, with Netflix having recently announced plans to build six new stages in Brooklyn, in addition to offices in Manhattan.
Big-budget features do sometimes use other cities as stand-ins for New York City due to its unique production challenges, or because they choose bases elsewhere in the world.
Sony’s superhero movie Morbius recently used London as a base and used parts of Manchester to double for New York.
