Netflix has announced that it would reconsider long-term location filming plans in the US state of Georgia if a controversial abortion bill becomes law.
Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, has supported a bill that would outlaw abortions in the state once a foetal heartbeat is detected – often just six weeks into pregnancy. The bill is on track to become law next year.
Several independent US producers have already said they will not shoot in Georgia while the bill is being considered, but Netflix is the first major production entity to make a public stand on the issue.
“We have many women working on productions in Georgia, whose rights, along with millions of others, will be severely restricted by this law,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix.
“It’s why we will work with the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) and others to fight it in court. Given the legislation has not yet been implemented, we’ll continue to film there – while also supporting partners and artists who choose not to.
“Should it ever come into effect, we’d rethink our entire investment in Georgia.”
Georgia is one of America’s top production hubs, having built a thriving movie and TV industry in recent years through generous filming incentive support and world-class studio facilities.
Marvel has had a long-term presence at Pinewood Atlanta Studios and has shot many of its big-budget features there including Avengers: Infinity War and its follow-up Endgame.
The Netflix statement puts pressure on Marvel, and indeed all the major Hollywood studios, to clarify their positions on the matter.
