David Cronenberg has begun production in Greece for Serendipity Point Films and Argonauts Productions on Crimes Of The Future starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart.
Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos have joined a previously announced cast that includes Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, and Lihi Kornowski.
The Canada-Greece co-production is scheduled to shoot in Greece until September. Cronenberg wrote the screenplay – his first original script since eXistenZ in 1999 – set in the near-future where some humans accept accelerated evolution while others try to police it.
“As we begin filming Crimes Of The Future, just two days into this new adventure with David Cronenberg, it feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible,” said Mortensen. “We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate and quite credible. I can’t wait to see where we end up.”
Robert Lantos reteams with Cronenberg on their fourth production together and is producing alongside Panos Papahadzis for Athens-based Argonauts. Steve Solomos is co-producer. Executive producers include Joe Iacono, Thorsten Schumacher, Peter Touche, Christelle Conan, Aida Tannyan, Victor Loewy, and Victor Hadida. Bonnie Do and Laura Lanktree are associate producers.
Neon holds US rights to the sci-fi, while mk2/Mile End will release in Canada, Metropolitan in France, Weltkino in Germany-speaking Europe, The Searchers in Benelux, Argonauts Productions in Greece, Front Row in Middle East, Capella in CIS/ the Baltic State, and Moviecloud in Taiwan. Rocket Science is handling International Sales.
Crimes Of The Future is produced in association with Ingenious Media, Coficine, Telefilm Canada, Bell Media, CBC, and the Harold Greenberg Fund, with the support of EKOME and the GFC.
