Exclusive: Screen Gems feature The Bride is set to shoot in Hungary, doubling for the UK. Garrett Hedlund, Nathalie Emmanuel and Alana Boden star in the contemporary horror thriller, inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
The story centres on a young woman who is invited to a smart wedding in England. Swept off her feet, she realises that, amid a gothic conspiracy, her attendance has sinister implications. Jessica M Thompson directs from a screenplay by Blair Butler; Emile Gladstone produces.
The Bride will be filming from late September in various Budapest locations and at Movie Farm studio, a new facility in Budapest. Mid Atlantic Films is the production service company.
Although Hungary did shut down due to Covid last year, the hiatus was relatively short-lived compared to some other countries. By the summer, production was back up and running, with subsequent projects including the UK-Hungary co-production Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, which doubled Budapest for the French capital during an autumn shoot.
The grand civic architecture of Budapest makes it an ideal double for other old European cities, while the more modern parts are used to ‘play’ American locales.
There are several world-class studios, including Korda, Origo and MaFilm, and an attractive incentive of a 30% cash rebate for international productions, with no minimum spend.
