Filming gets underway on Monday, 11 April, on Firebrand, a psychological horror film set in the Tudor court.
Alicia Vikander plays Catherine Parr (replacing the originally-announced Michelle Williams), the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, with Jude Law as the much-married monarch.
Brazilian-born director Karim Aïnouz is calling the shots – his English-language feature debut – from a screenplay by Jessica and Henrietta Ashworth, best known for Killing Eve. Gabrielle Tana produces.
The thriller, which is based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s bestselling historical novel Queen’s Gambit, is told through the eyes of Catherine as she navigates her life with the monstrous, increasingly despotic king.
Aïnouz told Deadline: “This a woman who deserves a portrait. There has been much depicted on the king and the wives that perished. It’s important to look at someone who turns out to be stronger than the forces around them. This is a modernistic look at the classic trope of the woman trapped in a castle with a monster.”
Much of the filming will take place at Haddon Hall, Derbyshire, pictured above.
