Filming on the third instalment of My Big Fat Greek Wedding has started in Athens, Greece.
The romantic comedy threequel starring Nia Vardalos, John Corbett and Michael Constantine is backed by Playtone, Gold Circle, HBO and Focus.
Although plot details remain under wraps, it is expected to centre on the anticipated wedding of Paris (Elena Kampouris) - daughter of Toula (Vardalos) and Ian (Corbett).
Taking to Instagram on 22 June, Vardalos shared a video post updating her followers about the production: “I have an announcement: 'We are in Greece, filming [MBFGW3] and thank you so much for the lovely messages of waiting and everything [...] We're filming in the beautiful Plaka of Athens”, she said.
She continued: “I wanted to teach you your first Greek word, which is σκηνοθέτης. What that means is 'director,' and guess who the director is? It's me!”
The actress's announcement comes after it was rumoured back in May that the film's original director, Joel Zwick, was expected to helm the project.
Vardalos, who also wrote the first two films and the spin-off TV series My Big Fat Greek Life, will return as writer and reprise her role as Fotoula 'Toula' Portokalos.
The franchise's first two films shot in Chicago and Toronto.
A release date for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is to be confirmed.
