Exclusive: Ellen Kuras’s hotly-anticipated WWII set film Lee, starring Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Andrea Riseborough and Marion Cotillard, is in pre-production in Hungary and also expected to shoot in Croatia.
Based on a script by Liz Hannah, the drama tells the experiences of Lee Miller (Winslet) who went from being a Vogue cover model to a photographer during WWII chronicling the fighting on the allied front line exposing the atrocities of Hitler’s Nazi Germany in the concentration camps.
Riseborough plays Audrey Withers, the editor of British Vogue who was a close friend of Miller but was part of the decision making to not publish her shocking Dachau photos. Cotillard plays Solange D’Ayen, the fashion director of French Vogue. Law is playing Roland Penrose, the artist and poet who became the love of Miller’s life.
Filming in Croatia is expected to take place in and around the city of Dubrovnik, including at the ruins of the abandoned Kupali military resort near the city, according to local reports.
Finola Dwyer, Troy Lum and Hopscotch Features’ Andrew Mason are producing Lee with Winslet. Hannah will be exec producer. Rocket Science is executive producing and selling international.
Another big project shooting in Hungary is Neill Blomkamp’s video game adaptation Gran Turismo, backed by Playstation Productions and Columbia Pictures.
Shooting is due to take place in the country from September to December.
Based on a true story and script by Jason Hall, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.
PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan serve as producers alongside Doug Belgrad, and Dana Brunetti.
Hungary is doing an impressive job of attracting several major international projects, including the multi-million dollar series Rise of the Raven (working title), which is currently shooting near Budapest; Netflix’s series All the Lights We Cannot See, directed by Shawn Levy; Warner Bros./Legendary’s Dune: Part Two, starring Timothee Chalamet; and Paramount+ sci-fi series Halo S2.
