A movie adaptation of the 2019 video game Death Stranding was announced in December 2022. Now, clarification has come as to the role of the game's auteur Hideo Kojima in the hotly anticipated movie.
When the film was first announced, Kojima was not attached to the production as a director, leading some to wonder what his role would be. Via Twitter, Kojima recently clarified his part in the movie's production.
He wrote: "Just to be clear, I am deeply involved in producing, supervising, plotting, look, design and content of the film adaptation of DS, just not in charge of directing."
Kojima's Japan-based Kojima Productions has partnered with Barbarian EP Alex Lebovici’s LA-based Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce the movie.
The movie adaptation is fully financed by Hammerstone, with Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar serving as executive producers.
Death Stranding's video game features an A-list cast, including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro and Margaret Qualley. It has yet to be confirmed who will star in the film. Likewise, the film's plot has been kept under wraps, but will likely take a wealth of inspiration from the cinematic game itself.
The game requires players to reconnect a fractured society via courier routes in the wake of a cataclysmic ‘Death Stranding’ event. The event opened a doorway between the living and the dead, allowing creatures from the afterlife to inhabit the post-apocalyptic society. Reedus' Sam Bridges, a courier, embarks on a mission to deliver hope to humanity by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America.
