Production on Mortal Kombat 2 is officially underway in Australia.

Producer James Wan announced production start on his Instagram Story this week, while producer Todd Garner shared a cast seat of a fan favourite character, Baraka, on Twitter

The film stars Martyn Ford, Karl Urban and Hiroyuki Sanada.

2021's Mortal Kombat is a fantasy action film based on the popular Mortal Kombat series of fighting games produced by Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and serves as a reboot to Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Though plot details for the second chapter remain under wraps, Mortal Kombat 2 is expected to pick up shortly after the events of 2021's Mortal Kombat live-action reboot.

The film featured a number of iconic Mortal Kombat characters, including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Jax, and Raiden. However, the film's central focus was Cole Young, a new character created specifically for the film.

It followed Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage or why the assassin Sub-Zero is hunting him down. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a fellowship of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm against Outworld.

Simon McQuoid returns to direct the sequel from a screenplay co-written by Ed Boon, Jeremy Slater and John Tobias.
