New BBC/Netflix drama Lockerbie sets Malta, Toronto, Scotland shoot

The BBC and Netflix are joining up on a new factual drama about the Lockerbie bombing, with World Productions producing. 

The drama, simply called Lockerbie, will centre on the investigation into the crash – that killed 270 people - on both sides of the Atlantic and the devastating effect it had on the small Scottish town and the families of the victims. 

From the initial exhaustive search for evidence on the ground in Scotland, via the US and Malta to the trial at Camp Zeist in 2000, the drama will go right up to the most recent indictment at the end of 2022.

Lockerbie will film in Scotland, Toronto and Malta; Jonathan Lee is lead writer, with Gillian Roger Park penning two episodes. Julia Stannard produces with Michael Keillor directing. Lockerbie is produced in association with MGM Television, that originally developed the project with Night Train Media.

The drama was instigated by filmmaker Adam Morane-Griffiths whose extensive research includes interviews with Scottish police officers and representatives from US investigative agencies, many of whom have never previously shared their stories.

Morane-Griffiths, who exec produces, said: "I've been working on this project for seven years, so it's very dear to my heart. The investigation was extraordinary, as was the trial, and I'm beyond excited to work with such incredible partners bringing it to life."

Writer Lee added: "The Pan Am 103 Disaster and the global manhunt it spawned was a defining event in world history – one that contains so many instances of resilience and courage that deserve to be honoured and understood. It’s a privilege to write this story for the screen."

The executive producers are Simon Heath and Roderick Seligman for World Productions; Steve Stark and Stacey Levin for Toluca Pictures, Adam Morane-Griffiths, Sara Curran, Herbert L. Kloiber, Michael Keillor and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC. The co-executive producer is Joe Hill. Mona Qureshi will oversee for Netflix.
