Amazon Prime Video has ordered its first Swedish action series, titled Hell of a Date and helmed by Denmark’s Milad Avaz.
The Tehran-born filmmaker’s latest gig consisted of directing and writing the eight-episode series Alfa (2020), starring Andreas Jessen, Sebastian Jessen and Lars Mikkelsen in the leading roles.
Avaz’s brand-new 4x40 show, described as a “thrilling, action-packed roller coaster set in the world of Swedish media and politics,” and a “gripping, funny and loving story that has something important to say at its core: how we humans embrace change,” is set in Sweden as the country faces primitive power outages and ominous predictions about the coming winter. More particularly, the plot zooms in on reluctant widower Arthur (Erik “Jerka” Johansson). He gets recruited to help his colleague, star journalist Cristina (Nina Zanjani), who dares to question the mainstream narrative. Feeling cornered by the police and other powers, Arthur becomes her partner-in-crime, during the craziest, most hazardous day of his life. The only problem is that he has a date with Mille (Hanna Alström) and so as not to arouse any suspicion, it needs to happen as planned.
The script was penned by Avaz with Jacob Katz Hansen and Anna Neye.
Production is now under way in Stockholm. Other confirmed cast members include Adam Pålsson, Alba August and Valter Skarsgård.
Hell of a Date is being produced by Christian Potalivo for Nordisk Film-owned outfit Drive Studios, with Maj-Britt Landin as executive producer.
Amazon Prime Video is set to release the series in 2024.
