James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has begun filming in New York City, New York, and New Jersey.
Timothée Chalamet, recently seen in Dune: Part II, stars as Dylan. The film follows Dylan’s arrival in New York City in 1961 on the hunt to find an ailing Woody Guthrie, his idol.
As he finds his footing in New York thanks to the help of the city's folk heroes, he soon becomes a sensation. The film will chart Dylan’s meteoric rise and his transition away from folk music, to the electric guitar, and the fallout that ensues.
Elle Fanning stars as Dylan’s early ’60s love interest, university student and artist Sylvie Russo, with Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez.
Also in the cast are Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Scoot McNairy, Dan Fogler, Will Harrison, Charlie Tahan, P.J. Byrne, Eli Brown, Nick Pupo, Big Bill Morganfield, Laura Kariuki, Eric Berryman, David Alan Basche, Joe Tippett, and James Austin Johnson.
Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York) wrote the script, with Mangold handling revisions.
Dylan’s longtime representative Jeff Rosen produces alongisde Range’s Fred Berger, The Picture Company’s Alex Heineman, Veritas Entertainment Group’s Peter Jaysen, Bob Bookman, and Alan Gasmer, Chalamet, and Mangold via his Turnpike Films banner.
Executive producers include Dylan, as well as Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Andrew Rona.
