Netflix has announced an upcoming romance series currently in production in Japan.
The Korean-Japanese co-production is based on the French film Les Émotifs anonymes (English title, Romantics Anonymous) and will be arriving on Netflix in 2025.
Sho Tsukikawa of Yu Yu Hakusho will direct the series. The screenplay isby Kim Ji Hyun with Yoshikazu Okada. Cinematography is by Kosuke Yamada. Lee Ha Jun and Yang Jin Mo, both of whom worked on Parasite, serve as production designer and and editor respectively.
Producers are Kim Yong Eun, Choi Gi Young, Kim-Keum Sil; Takuro Nagai, and Mao Osaki of Yong Film and Ryu Film respectively.
This is the first Japanese series developed and produced by Yong Film, best known for Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden.
The story follows the budding relationship between a man and a woman sparked by their mutual love for chocolate, each of whom lives with an anxiety disorder. Shun Oguri plays Sosuke Fujiwara, the main lead, along with Han Hyo-Joo as Hana Lee, the heroine. They are joined by Jin Akanishi as Hiro and Yuri Nakamura as Irene.
In a statement, Lim Seung Young, production and showrunner from Yong Film said, "I am truly delighted to witness the process of a project coming to fruition after 10 years of development; through the hands of a Korean screenwriter, a Japanese director, and the performance of top actors from both Japan and Korea."
Executive producer Makiko Okano added: "The top-notch staff and cast from both countries respect each other's cultures and weave a beautiful story with pride."
