According to findings from Gina Lavery, of Econsult Solutions, Inc., an analyst hired by Montana, film and TV companies spent $334m in the state over the past two years, with Paramount's Yellowstone franchise named as the largest contributor.
The findings were given to the Legislative Interim Revenue Committee on Monday (June 24), which is examining the benefits of Montanta's $24 million film tax credit program.
Lavery's results further state that approximately $60m went towards payroll for Montana-based employees. 510 full-time jobs created directly by film and TV production, and 810 jobs created indirectly. $90.4m was spent locally on production and $184m was spent on talent; the Yellowstone franchise alone spent $275.7m between July 2022 and May 2024.
The Montana Economic Development Industry Advancement (MEDIA) Act offers a 20% transferable income tax credit on production expenditures in the state per production.
Additional incentives include 25% of compensation for MT resident crew, 15% of compensation for non-MT resident crew, 20% of above-the-line compensation (actor, director, producer, writer), 30% of compensation paid to a student enrolled in a MT college/university who works on the production for college credit, 10% of payments to MT colleges/universities for stage, equipment, rentals, or location fees for filming on campus, 10% of all in-studio facility/equipment expenditures that rents a studio for 20 days or more, 5% of expenditures in an underserved county, 5% for using “Filmed in Montana” screen credit logo, and 25% of post-production wages.
