Japan's Nippon TV and London-based Anyway Content have announced a co-development partnership for the original scripted series How To Be A Sensei.
The original comedy-drama is co-written by Nippon TV's creative director and scriptwriter Itaru Mizuno and British writer Zoë Tomalin. It is in advanced development following a writing room recently held in Tokyo.
The series, based on an original concept by Mizuno, is set in Japan and the UK. It follows a young British woman whose dream is to become a manga artist in Japan and one day be called 'Sensei' (which means teacher, but is also a term of respect for those with great skill) and whose journey to succeed will take her through iconic and underground locations in Tokyo.
Sayako Aoki, Head of global, scripted at Nippon TV, is producing, with chairman James Baker, head of development Kathryn Castles and development executive Cassie Smyth driving the project for Anyway Content.
Nippon TV has previously co-developed series with western companies such as Connected, with UK's Envision Entertainment, and Issak, with Germany-based ZDF Studios and Studio Zentral; Mizuno is part of the creative team on both series.
Tomalin's other credits include producing and script-editing UKTV's Hypothetical, co-creating Channel 4's Late Night Forever, writing for 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and three episodes of the animated adventure comedy 'Badjelly', starring Miriam Margolyes and Rhys Darby which will air in New Zealand, Australia and Canada and is set to deliver in 2025.
How To Be A Sensei will be launched at MIPCOM Cannes by Nippon TV.
