Film spending in Canada's Thompson-Nicola region set to quadruple by end of 2024

Film spending in the Canadian regional district of Thompson-Nicola is set to quadruple by the end of the year, according to film commissioner Terri Hadwin.

Speaking to Thompson-Nicola-based Kamloops.net, Hadwin said an estimated $26 million will be spent in the British Colombia region.

She added: “It’ll be hard to say until closer to the end of the year when I can actually crunch all of my numbers. I don't want to say yes for sure, but I think it's close to that." The region could see an injection of $65 million for 2024, when taking into account indirect spending.

Direct spending in 2023 was reported as $6 million, with an overall spend of $18 million including indirect spending.

Films to shoot in Thompson-Nicola recently include IndustryWorks Studio's Get Fast starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Crave's Die Alone starring Carrie-Anne Moss. Further productions include Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Calamity Jane and the CBS series Tracker.

British Colombia has three levels of tax incentives, which are based on where principal photography takes place in relation to Vancouver. The Thompson-Nicola region is in the distant regional location tax incentives zone. International productions receive a tax credit of 28% with a 6% uplift for shooting in a distant regional location.
