What Qualifies

Goods and services purchased and consumed in AB including post-production, special effects, all rentals, set construction and props, animation, craft services, all Alberta labor, food and accomodations, in-province travel, all production services.

The production company must be incorporated in AB or registered to do business in AB and be in good standing with Corporate Registry. Distributors/broadcasters are ineligible.

Benefit

25%-29% of qualifying Alberta (AB) expenditures (not limited to AB labor). Funding falls under one of two 'Streams':

  • Stream I, 29% Grant: AB company owns between 30% and 100% of the production and minimum six AB residents in key creative positions (two trainees in key creative positions may be substituted for one key creative position).

  • Stream II, 25% Grant: AB company has 30% or less ownership in the production and minimum four AB residents in key creative positions (two trainees in key creative positions may be substituted for one key creative position).

Each Stream can earn an additional 1% of funding for productions that shoot more than 30 consecutive days in AB (or reach 300 person hours for digital projects).

In addition, the AB incentive is stackable with Canada Federal Tax Incentive, which is 16% of qualifying Canadian labor expenditures, net of assistance (which includes any provincial credits attributed to qualifying labor spend).

Eligible Productions

The production company must be incorporated in AB or registered to do business in AB and be in good standing with Corporate Registry. Distributors/broadcasters are ineligible.

Project Criteria

Application must be submitted prior to the start of principal photography. Minimum local spend of $50K CAD required for
projects with a commercial license agreement and $100K CAD for projects without a commercial license agreement. Production must provide evidence
of 70% confirmed financing for projects > $1M CAD, 50% confirmed financing for projects < $1M CAD, or 100% confirmed financing for projects with no commercial license agreement. NOTE: Projected grant may be included as
part of the confirmed financing. Production must also provide audited financial statements for productions > $500K CAD, a review engagement for productions between $200K CAD and $500K CAD, or an uncertified final cost report with a producer statutory declaration for productions < $200K CAD.
