Director Fernando González Molina has announced details of a major new period drama, Palm Trees in the Snow (Palmeras en la Nieve), starring Mario Casas, who also featured in Molina’s Three Steps Above Heaven and I Want You.
From Atresmedia Cine, the feature is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Luz Gabas, with a screenplay by Sergio G Sánchez. Mercedes Gamero produces, with shooting due to begin in June 2014 in Huesca (north east Spain), Costa Rica and the Canary Islands.
The novel is set over two time periods: in the 1950s, two brothers leave their home in the Pyrenees to find their father on the remote and exotic island of Fernando Poo (off the coast of West Africa, now called Bioko), where he works on a cocoa plantation. A passionate love story unfolds against the backdrop of Spanish colonial rule, which is then uncovered some fifty years later by Clarence, the brother’s daughter, as she finally begins to reveal the story behind their life-changing secret.
