Abu Dhabi Film Festival now open for entries

The seventh Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) which takes place 24 October – 2 November, is now accepting entries.

The seventh Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) which takes place 24 October – 2 November, is now accepting entries. Categories include the Narrative Competition for international feature length fiction films, and Showcase for narrative and documentary features. The top prize fund is $100,000 for the prestigious Black Pearl Award.


Last year the festival received over 3,500 submissions from 75 countries. Winners included A World Not Ours (Lebanon) by Mahdi Fleifel which won the Black Pearl for best documentary, and Coming Forth by Day (Egypt) by Hala Lofty, who won best director from the Arab World.

The festival organisers say they are “committed to curating exceptional programs to engage and educate the local community, inspire filmmakers and nurture the growth of the regional film industry”.

The full list of categories in this year’s competition are:

• Narrative Competition - An international selection of feature-length fiction films.
• New Horizons Competition - An international selection of first and second feature-length narrative films.
• Documentary Competition - An international selection of feature-length non-fiction films.
• Short Films Competition - An international selection of narrative and documentary short films.
• Emirates Film Competition - Short films from the UAE and GCC countries.
• Showcase - A panorama of outstanding recent narrative and documentary features.
• Our World Competition - Films devoted to broadening awareness of significant environmental issues.
• Special Programs - Restorations and retrospectives, as well as specially curated programs and presentations focusing on exciting developments and trends in filmmaking around the world.

Narrative films should be 60 minutes or more; documentary feature films 52 minutes or more; and short films must not exceed 35 minutes. For a full list of terms and conditions, click here.

The deadline for submissions is 15 July.
