Major Bollywood movie Dishoom will film key scenes on location at the luxury Yas Viceroy Hotel on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
“We have signed a deal and there will be three major scenes shot here,” said Andrew Humphries, general manager of the Yas Viceroy Hotel, in comments to media outlet the National.
“It’s a huge production and how these scenes fit into the overall movie, I’m not sure. Dishoom will be quite a production for Abu Dhabi, I think.”
Abu Dhabi is a popular filming location for Bollywood features. The emirate city offers exotic visuals backed up by a 30% filming incentive, and is also geographically close to the Indian film industry.
Hollywood has been generally slower to commit to location filming in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), although big-budget productions have increased in the past year.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (pictured) filmed in the dunes around Abu Dhabi, while Fast & Furious 7 shot key action sequences in the city itself. Brad Pitt’s Netflix feature War Machine recently wrapped scenes that doubled Abu Dhabi for Afghanistan.
In the last few months, Star Trek Beyond spent several weeks on location in Dubai, boosting interest in a city that’s yet to offer a formal filming incentive.
The standard of support received by these Hollywood productions on the ground will help determine the major studios’ interest in the UAE in the coming years.
