Vin Diesel’s action sequel xXx: Return of Xander Cage used Pinewood Toronto Studios as a production base but also filmed scenes in the Dominican Republic.
The production team’s filming decisions were based on a combination of past experience and matching script requirements to the right facilities.
“We had worked with the executive producer Ric Kidney before on Total Recall in Toronto and he is very familiar with working in Toronto and the local crews there so it was set up at the studios at Pinewood for interiors,” says Eoin Egan, senior vice president of Pinewood International, in comments to KFTV.
“We then learned of the production’s location requirements and arranged production scouts with the team at Pinewood Dominican Republic (DR) Studios.
“The director DJ Caruso and his team made a decision to shoot in DR after finding a wide range of diverse locations along with the Horizon Tank. Also, Vin Diesel has a history of shooting in the DR and a love for the country.”
Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios currently offers three stages, with a fourth in development. The facility also has a 60,500 sq ft Horizon Water Tank (pictured) as part of a larger eight-acre ‘water effects’ facility.
“Since Pinewood have set up in the DR the team have built world class infrastructure and Lantica Media have done a great job in terms of crew training and developing international production services,” Egan tells KFTV.
“The DR has a wide range of locations, a strong tax incentive, great weather and can double for multiple locations in the Caribbean and the US.”
Other productions to have filmed at Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios have included thriller 47 Meters Down, about two sisters trapped on the seabed in a shark cage.
