Filmmaker Mike Leigh is shooting at locations across the UK for his historical movie Peterloo.
The film tells the story of the Peterloo Massacre that took place in Manchester in August 1819.
Cavalry charged into a crowd of as many as 80,000 people protesting for parliamentary reform, resulting in around 18 deaths and many hundreds of injuries.
Leigh is doubling multiple parts of the UK for period Manchester, shooting in a broad variety of locations that offer the right period visuals for the story, according to a Guardian report.
“There has never been a feature film about the Peterloo massacre,” Leigh said when the start of filming was announced in mid-May. “The universal significance of this historic event becomes ever more relevant in our own turbulent times.”
The director is working with a bigger budget than normal as Amazon Studios is co-financing the shoot, along with Film4, the British Film Institute and Lipsync.
