Hungary has increased its filming incentive support from a base 25% to 30% of eligible local spending to boost its competitiveness in central Europe.

Budapest is already a hugely popular European production hub. The Hungarian capital offers good studio infrastructure and the city itself can double for many of the continent’s cities.

High-profile recent films have included 80s-set spy thriller Atomic Blonde (pictured), which used the city as a stand-in for Berlin, and Blade Runner 2049, which doubled parts of Budapest for dystopian versions of San Diego and Las Vegas.

Television drama The Alienist used the city as a stand-in for period New York.

Netflix’s feature The King, featuring Timothee Chalamet as Henry V, is currently filming in the country.

Hungary’s change will put particular pressure on neighbouring Czech Republic. Earlier this month, Czech producers speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival called on their government to boost the country’s filming incentive, which currently stands at 20%.
