New production facility CBS Stages Canada has been announced for development near central Toronto for an opening in mid-2019.
The 260,000-sq-ft facility will be based in the suburb of Mississauga, 18 miles from downtown Toronto, and will offer six sound stages, production offices and support services.
CBS Stages Canada is the US TV network’s response to its expanding slate of productions being made in Toronto.
The company is currently working on a second series of Star Trek: Discovery (pictured) from a base at Pinewood Toronto Studios, and comedy drama In the Dark is also shooting in the city, telling the story of a blind woman who becomes the only witness to a murder.
“CBS has a strong production history in Canada,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios, in a statement.
“The Toronto area specifically has provided our series with diverse and appealing locations as well as production infrastructure and crafts expertise that cannot be easily found.
“These new stages will provide valuable resources and additional capacity for our company’s growing production slate.”
The CBS announcement comes within a few weeks of the news that First Studio City is developing a new production facility in Markham, not far from Mississauga, but that studio complex is scheduled to open a year after CBS Stages Canada.
Pinewood Studios Toronto is also engaged in expansion plans, though First Studio City plans to develop a stage larger than Pinewood’s current 45,900-sq-ft ‘Mega Stage’.
