Netflix has announced new offices to be opened in Madrid and Paris next year as the streaming giant expands its European operations.

The Madrid office will support a previously-announced production hub that is set to be established just outside the Spanish capital.

“With the recent commitment to a production hub in Spain, and our level of investment in local originals ramping up significantly, we have decided to open a Madrid office next year to complement the activities of the hub and support our increasing business in the region,” said Erik Barmack, vice-president of international originals at Netflix.

The company’s Paris office is a response to a long-term surge in French subscribers – thought to be in the region of 3.5 million – since the service launched in the country in 2014.

Netflix has more than a dozen shows scheduled for release soon in France and success could lead to a doubling of this scale of output.

Amazon is also expanding its European interests. The rival streaming giant is recruiting development executives in Germany, France, Spain and Italy to search for local stories, according to a Screen International report, with productions on the continent to be co-ordinated from a creative hub in London.

“What I want is people to come in and say specifically, ‘This is a Spanish show and these are the reasons it will work so well there for you’,” said Georgia Brown, director of European Originals for Amazon, in comments to Screen International.

“I don’t need it to work in America - it’s great when they travel but I don’t need that. I need it for that audience," Brown added.

“There’s so many different models now in terms of how we can work and collaborate with broadcasters, and a number of different ways we can make up the slate.”
