Filmmaker brothers Anthony and Joe Russo are producers on Iraq-set war movie Mosul, which has shot on location in Morocco.
Mosul is based on the true story of an elite group of Iraqi police officers, recruited largely from the movie’s namesake city in northern Iraq, who fought to free the area from ISIS militants in 2014.
Screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan makes his directorial debut with the film.
The Russo Brothers are best known for jointly helming four Marvel superhero movies in as many years, including Avengers: Infinity War.
“Our writer-director Matthew Michael Carnahan was the perfect artist to depict this uniquely regional story, which champions a culture that has never really been championed on screen before,” the brothers said in a statement.
“The heart of the movie depicts the innate desire to fight for country and home.”
Morocco is one of the top international locations for Middle Eastern story settings.
Most recently the North African country has doubled for the likes of Yemen, Iraq and Syria in the Amazon drama series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and again for Iraq in the British series Baghdad Central, which is set in the aftermath of the US-led invasion in 2003.
