Warner Bros is to acquire part of The Burbank Studios north of Los Angeles and will also be the sole long-term occupant of two new office buildings to be developed nearby.

The Burbank Studios is a 35-acre production facility that offers 11 sound stages, with four more currently in development.

Renowned architect Frank Gehry has designed two distinctive office buildings that will be built adjacent to the Burbank Media District main lot. From a nearby freeway the offices will resemble sleek “icebergs” with long glass facades.

Ground-breaking on the new offices is scheduled for later this year with final occupancy planned to help mark Warner Bros’ centennial celebrations in 2023.

“Once upon a time, Hollywood studios had an important architectural presence in the city – they were like monuments to the movie-making process,” said Gehry.

“With this project, I was trying to recapture that feeling of old Hollywood splendour. We wanted to create a 21st century version that would have a strong and unique identity for Jeff Worthe (of developer Worthe Real Estate Group) and for Warner Bros in the centre of Burbank.”

Warner Bros is scheduled to film Space Jam 2 in California with basketball star LeBron James and has also recently secured filming incentive support to shoot entirely in the state for a live-action film adaptation of the 1980s manga classic Akira.
