A Jumanji sequel is filming scenes in Alberta, Canada, making use of regional snow and glacier locations near Calgary.

The movie stars Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black, and is a follow-up to the family adventure film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which was a huge hit in 2017.

Production on the new film has already encompassed extensive studio shooting in US hub Atlanta and has also returned to the Hawaii locations that featured in the previous movie.

The scope of story settings looks set to be expanded in the new movie, riding high on the success of the rebooted franchise.

“Our production train rolls on to shoot in some pretty wild locations,” Johnson commented recently through his Instagram feed. “The hot jungles to the icy snow-capped mountains and to the blistering desert dunes.”

Calgary continues to develop as a Canadian production hub. The city’s purpose-built Calgary Film Centre offers three sound stages that span a collective 50,000 square feet, but as a province Alberta is best known for its wintry locations.

Recent productions have included the acclaimed TV adaptation of Fargo and the revenge thriller Cold Pursuit, starring Liam Neeson. In both cases Calgary stood in for remote US story settings.

Alberta’s Screen-Based Production Grant offers incentive support worth up to 30% of eligible local spending, with a per-production cap of CA$7.5m.
